FROM BEN HOLCOMB
I had a chance to travel to Chicago last weekend and view the premiere of the new Sean Casey IMAX Movie Tornady Alley. With a full release slated for Friday, I thought I'd at least post my thoughts on the movie.
Overall, I rate the movie very high. It was very much not like the show Storm Chasers on Discovery, and focused mostly on the storms, not on the storm chasers and their drama. It was quite scientific, however, explained the scientific concepts in a way that could be understood by people of almost all ages. Bill Paxton does almost all of the narration, and does a very good job of it.
The only complaint I have is the fact that there are very few tornadoes to be seen in the movie - That's not to say that there aren't a lot of tornadoes, I would have just liked to see more. The film focused quite a bit on the Vortex II project, and the scientific data collection behind it. It also included some amazing video from storms that didn't produce tornadoes, including an amazing Mammatus shot.
There was also a period of the film that focused on damage done by Tornadoes, which mostly featured Wadena, MN after their devestating tornadoes last summer, and the damage left in it's wake.
The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago was an Omnimax Dome, so the picture was stretched to be all around you. It increased the effect on some shots, and completely skewed/blurred others. I hope to see the film on a non-dome screen at some point during it's release.
The best shot of the movie was the massive Manchester, SD tornado from Tornado Tuesday in June 2003. It looks absolutely amazing on the big IMAX screen.
If you get the chance to see this movie, you need to go see it. Storm Chasers, Meteorologists, Kids, and the general population will all get something out of this movie.
NOTE; i plan to see this movie for my birthday gift
